The book that comes to my mind is the one on the VCR published by the MIT Press and written by Joshua Greenberg.78 It describes the birth of the market of movies on tape while the VCR was being marketed as a technology to record TV shows—a device that could free users from television schedules. He focuses on the intermediaries between manufacturers and consumers, including sellers, and he extensively quotes Analog Days. I think Analog Days is not only a great book on sound studies but also the one where you have shown better, at least so far, the full potential of SCOT. You have this very articulated map of relevant social actors, you have these continuous stabilization processes described at many different levels, and you have this coshaping relationship between the instrument and the users—the bands—that allows you to address the relationship of the processes you describe with the wider social context.79 To use an example that we have already mentioned, you show how Van Koevering could foresee a new role for the keyboard player in a band: he could finally compete with the guitarist. The Moog was reshaping their roles and music as well.
